How to connect a printer using a crossover cable and no router

I have a printer with a bad USB port and I would like to connect the printer using the ethernet port. I understand that I can plug the printer directly to the computer with a crossover internet cable. I have been told that all that needs to be done is to define the IP Address of the printer (maybe with a new subnet) and also set the computer with an address that includes this subnet.

Since the computer also used standard wireless connections to access the internet (but I cannot add any printers to this network) I do not want to disturb any of the network settings for wireless.

  3. Use the printer setup assistant to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network. Check the printer's documentation for details.

If the printer can create an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network

You may be able to use the printer's own ad-hoc Wi-Fi network to set up Wi-Fi printing:
